Skin Tag or Lesion - What is the difference?

Bernice Crawshaw

Skin tags and skin lesions are both common skin conditions, but they have distinct characteristics.

skin tag

A skin tag, also known as an acrochordon, is a small, soft, benign growth that typically appears on the neck, armpits, eyelids, or groin area. They are usually flesh-colored or slightly darker and can vary in size from a few millimeters to a centimeter or more. Skin tags are harmless and painless, and they often hang off the skin by a thin stalk.

On the other hand, a skin lesion is a broader term that refers to any abnormality or change in the skin's appearance or texture. Skin lesions can include a wide range of conditions, such as moles, warts, rashes, blisters, bumps, or discoloration. Unlike skin tags, skin lesions can be benign or malignant, and they may require medical attention depending on their characteristics and associated symptoms.

It's important to note that while skin tags are generally harmless and do not require treatment, some skin lesions may be indicative of underlying health issues or pose a risk of developing into skin cancer. It is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment if you have any concerns about your skin's appearance or the presence of skin tags or skin lesions.

At R&B Clinical we offer a one-stop service for the removal of skin tags and lesions. We will ask you to send us a photo, undertake an assessment and then offer you an appointment (usually within the week).
